On April 22, Infineon Technologies officially introduced its CoolGaN™ G5 mid-voltage transistor series—the world's first industrial-grade GaN power transistors to feature an integrated Schottky diode. This innovative design marks a major advancement in power electronics by significantly boosting system efficiency and simplifying circuit design.

The CoolGaN™ G5 transistors are engineered to reduce dead-time losses, a common issue in high-performance power systems. By integrating a Schottky diode directly into the GaN transistor, Infineon has optimized the device for enhanced reverse conduction performance, resulting in lower power loss and greater overall energy efficiency.

Optimized for High-Density Power Applications

The new CoolGaN™ G5 transistors are ideal for a wide range of power-demanding industrial and consumer applications, including:

Intermediate Bus Converters (IBC) in telecom and server infrastructure

DC-DC converters

USB-C battery chargers using synchronous rectification

High-power PSUs (Power Supply Units)

Electric motor drives

By reducing reverse conduction losses, the transistors enable compatibility with a broader range of high-side gate drivers, and the relaxed dead-time requirements allow for increased controller flexibility, which ultimately leads to simplified design and faster time-to-market for engineers.

Advancing the GaN Power Ecosystem

Infineon’s latest addition to its CoolGaN™ portfolio signals a key milestone in the advancement of gallium nitride (GaN) technology. The integration of the Schottky diode represents a step forward in monolithic design, combining performance, reliability, and simplified implementation into a single package.

With rising demands for energy-efficient and compact power solutions in AI servers, data centers, renewable energy systems, and industrial automation, the CoolGaN™ G5 platform is set to play a pivotal role in next-generation power management systems.
