Samsung Unveils First In-Vehicle PCIe 4.0 SSD Based on 8th Gen V-NAND Flash: AM9C1

On September 24, Samsung announced the launch of its first in-vehicle PCIe 4.0 SSD, the AM9C1, based on 8th generation V-NAND flash technology. Currently, samples of the 256GB AM9C1 SSD are undergoing testing with major partners, with mass production expected to begin by the end of this year. Samsung plans to offer a range of capacities from 128GB to 2TB, with the 2TB version anticipated to start production in early next year to meet the growing demand for high-capacity in-vehicle SSDs.

The AM9C1 SSD features a 5nm controller chip and supports edge AI functionalities, providing enhanced performance and reliability, making it an ideal solution for in-vehicle applications that require AI capabilities. Compared to its predecessor, the AM991, the new SSD improves energy efficiency by approximately 50%, achieving a maximum sequential read speed of 4,400MB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 400MB/s.

Additionally, the 5nm controller chip offers SLC namespace functionality, allowing users to switch from triple-level cell (TLC) to SLC mode for significantly increased read and write speeds, with maximum sequential read speeds rising to 4,700MB/s and write speeds reaching 1,400MB/s, along with the reliability benefits associated with SLC SSDs.

Samsung's new in-vehicle SSD has passed stringent board-level testing and meets the AEC-Q100 automotive semiconductor quality standard at level 2 temperature testing, ensuring stable operation across a wide temperature range from -40°C to 105°C. Samsung stated that it is collaborating with global autonomous vehicle manufacturers to provide high-performance, high-capacity in-vehicle products while continuing to advance the development of the Physic AI memory market, encompassing applications from autonomous driving to robotics.
