For the first time, TSMC, the world's leading semiconductor foundry, has commenced large-scale production of advanced 4nm chips in the United States, according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

A Historic Milestone in U.S. Chip Manufacturing

Secretary Raimondo confirmed that TSMC’s Arizona plant began manufacturing 4nm chips in recent weeks. She remarked, "This marks the first time in U.S. history that leading-edge 4nm chips are being produced domestically by American workers. It’s a groundbreaking achievement that many thought was impossible."

This milestone underscores the significant strides made in semiconductor manufacturing within the U.S. as the global demand for advanced chips continues to surge, fueled in part by the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

TSMC’s Expanding U.S. Footprint

TSMC has been aggressively expanding its production capacity worldwide. In Arizona, the company has built two operational fabs and announced plans for a third in April 2024. The total investment for these facilities is projected to reach $65 billion.
Fab 1: 4nm chip production, operational in early 2025.

Fab 2: Scheduled to produce 2nm chips by 2028.

Fab 3: Set to manufacture 2nm or more advanced chips by 2030.

These fabs are critical to TSMC’s strategy of meeting the growing global demand for cutting-edge semiconductors, particularly for key clients like Apple, NVIDIA, and AMD.

TSMC's Dominance in the Semiconductor Industry

According to market research firm TrendForce, TSMC held nearly 65% of the global foundry market share in Q3 2024, further solidifying its leadership position. The company’s significant role in the AI boom is evident, as it supplies chips for many leading-edge AI applications.

Financial Performance Reflects Strong Demand

TSMC’s financial results mirror the surge in demand for advanced semiconductor technologies:

Q3 2024: Revenue reached NT$759.6 billion (~$23.5 billion), up 39.0% YoY and 12.8% QoQ. Net profit soared to NT$325.3 billion, up 54.2% YoY and 31.2% QoQ.

December 2024: Revenue totaled NT$278.1 billion, a 57.8% YoY increase, bringing total 2024 revenue to NT$2.89 trillion, up 33.9% YoY.

Looking forward, TSMC expects Q4 2024 sales to range between $26.1 billion and $26.9 billion, with gross margins between 57% and 59%.

TSMC: A Key Beneficiary of AI-Driven Growth

TSMC CFO Huang Ren-Chao attributed the company’s strong performance to robust demand for 3nm and 5nm technologies, particularly in smartphones and AI-related applications. He stated, "Our advanced nodes are driving the company’s growth trajectory, and we anticipate continued strong demand in Q4."

Conclusion

TSMC’s commencement of 4nm chip production in the U.S. represents a pivotal development in the semiconductor industry. With Arizona set to become a hub for advanced chip manufacturing, TSMC is well-positioned to capitalize on the booming AI and tech markets, strengthening both its global leadership and its contributions to the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem.
