On March 20, Microchip Technology (NASDAQ: MCHP) announced its plan to sell its Wafer Fab 2 facility located in Tempe, Arizona. The company has appointed Macquarie Group to lead the marketing and sale of the fab as part of a broader manufacturing reorganization strategy aimed at improving operational efficiency and profitability.
Streamlining Operations for Strategic Growth
Wafer Fab 2, which houses fully operational semiconductor equipment, is now being marketed under the guidance of Macquarie’s Semiconductor and Technology team within its Commodities and Global Markets division. The move aligns with Microchip’s initiative to optimize its global manufacturing footprint.
Production and technology currently based at the Tempe facility are being transitioned to:
Wafer Fab 4 in Oregon
Wafer Fab 5 in Colorado
These two sites will continue to play a central role in Microchip’s long-term production capacity planning.
Expertise in Semiconductor Asset Disposition
Michael Finley, Senior Vice President of Fab Operations at Microchip, emphasized that the decision to close and sell Wafer Fab 2 marks another step in the company’s ongoing transformation. He expressed confidence in Macquarie’s track record of successfully managing high-value semiconductor asset sales, ranging from advanced tools to complete manufacturing facilities.
Don Trent, Senior Managing Director at Macquarie, noted that the firm has completed over 50 wafer fab disposition projects and offers asset-centric solutions tailored to the semiconductor sector.
What This Means for Microchip and the Industry
This strategic sale allows Microchip to:
Consolidate manufacturing operations
Focus resources on high-capacity fabs
Increase capital efficiency
Align with evolving market demands
The sale also offers an opportunity for interested buyers to acquire a fully equipped, operational fab in the U.S. market—a rare chance amid the increasing global focus on semiconductor manufacturing capacity and supply chain localization.
Microchip’s Continued Commitment
Despite the sale, Microchip remains committed to:
Delivering reliable products
Maintaining high-quality standards
Providing strong technical support
Maximizing shareholder value through strategic business transformation
