Japanese semiconductor firm Rapidus has announced that its 2nm chip manufacturing facility is progressing smoothly, with trial production set to commence on April 1, 2025. The company will install over 200 production tools to facilitate the next-generation node fabrication.

Economic Impact of Rapidus' 2nm Production

Rapidus CEO Junichi Koike projected that the company’s cumulative economic output from mass production starting in 2027 through 2036 could reach ¥18 trillion (approximately $120 billion USD).

Competition with TSMC in the 2nm Race

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) remains the front-runner in 2nm chip production, having already established a lead in mass production timelines. However, Koike previously stated that Rapidus’ process speed and efficiency could help improve yield rates and performance quickly, allowing it to close the gap with TSMC.

With Japan aiming to strengthen its domestic semiconductor industry, the successful ramp-up of Rapidus’ 2nm process will be a critical milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce dependence on foreign chipmakers and secure a leading position in next-generation semiconductor technology.
