As the AI revolution continues to reshape the tech landscape, memory giant SK Hynix has announced a strategic shift in its CIS (CMOS Image Sensor) business to focus on AI-driven memory solutions. This move aims to strengthen the company’s position in the rapidly growing AI market, where high-performance storage solutions are in increasing demand.

Strategic Shift Towards AI Memory

Since its establishment in 2007, SK Hynix’s CIS division has navigated multiple challenges to secure a place in the mobile imaging sensor market. Over the years, the company has gained expertise in logic semiconductor technologies and custom chip solutions, expanding beyond traditional memory products.

With AI applications requiring high-speed, high-capacity storage, SK Hynix sees a significant opportunity to leverage its technological expertise to advance AI-focused memory solutions. The company emphasized that integrating its CIS division into AI memory development is a critical step toward enhancing its competitiveness in AI infrastructure.

Record-Breaking Financial Performance

The AI boom has significantly benefited SK Hynix, driving demand for its high-performance memory products. The company's 2024 financial results highlight a historic performance:

Annual revenue: 66.19 trillion KRW ($48.81 billion), marking a 102% year-over-year growth.

Operating profit: 23.46 trillion KRW ($17.30 billion).

Net profit: 19.8 trillion KRW ($14.59 billion), setting a new company record.

In Q4 2024, SK Hynix reported:

Revenue of 19.77 trillion KRW ($14.57 billion), a 74.8% YoY increase.

Operating profit of 8.08 trillion KRW ($5.96 billion), soaring 2,235.8% YoY.

Net profit of 8 trillion KRW ($5.83 billion), reflecting a 41% profit margin.

HBM and eSSD Sales Driving Growth

SK Hynix has positioned itself as a key player in High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a crucial technology for AI applications. HBM revenue now accounts for over 40% of the company’s total DRAM sales, making it the primary driver of profitability. Looking ahead, SK Hynix expects HBM sales to double in 2025.

Additionally, the enterprise SSD (eSSD) market has been a strong growth segment. In 2024, eSSD revenue grew by more than 300% YoY, with notable advancements in QLC-based high-capacity SSDs.

Future Outlook

By transitioning its CIS business into AI memory solutions, SK Hynix is positioning itself as a leader in AI-driven storage technologies. With demand for HBM, eSSD, and other AI-optimized memory solutions expected to surge, the company’s long-term strategy aligns with the rapid expansion of AI computing.
