South Korea's Record-Breaking $683.8 Billion Exports in 2024 Driven by Semiconductor Surge
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) of South Korea recently reported a historic high in the country's export figures for 2024, reaching $683.8 billion. This new record surpasses the previous high of $683.6 billion set in 2022, thanks to the robust growth in the semiconductor industry.
Semiconductor Exports Lead the Way
South Korea's semiconductor exports totaled $141.9 billion, marking an impressive 43.9% year-over-year increase. The semiconductor sector has seen uninterrupted growth for 14 consecutive months since November 2023, despite a slight decline in generic memory chip prices in Q4 2024. Overall, semiconductor sales outperformed the previous peak of $129.2 billion in 2022, underscoring the sector's pivotal role in South Korea's trade performance.
Trade Surplus and Reduced Imports
The country's trade surplus reached $51.8 billion, its highest since 2018, when the surplus stood at $69.7 billion. The surplus was buoyed by a 1.6% decrease in imports, which fell to $632.0 billion, largely due to reduced energy procurement costs.
Key Export Destinations
China: South Korea's largest trading partner, with exports reaching $133.0 billion, up 6.6% year-over-year.
United States: Exports to the U.S. hit a record $127.8 billion, growing 10.5%.
ASEAN: Exports to Southeast Asian nations increased 4.5%, totaling $114.0 billion.
Economic Implications
This remarkable export performance demonstrates South Korea's resilience and competitiveness in global markets, particularly in the high-tech sector. The semiconductor boom not only contributed to export growth but also solidified South Korea's position as a key player in the global supply chain, especially for advanced chips used in AI, automotive technologies, and data centers.
