Seagate Unveils Exos M 36TB HDD Featuring HAMR Technology

Seagate continues to push the boundaries of high-capacity storage with the launch of the Exos M 36TB HDD, marking another milestone in data center storage technology. This latest drive, based on Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology, delivers unprecedented storage density, making it the highest-capacity HDD available today.

A Leap in Capacity and Performance

Late last year, Seagate introduced the Exos M 3+ platform, designed to meet the stringent requirements of hyperscale cloud providers. The platform initially featured 30TB (CMR) and 32TB (SMR) variants, boasting maximum data transfer speeds of 275MB/s, with random read and write speeds reaching 170 IOPS and 350 IOPS, respectively. The drives are built with 10 platters, achieving a per-platter density of 3TB or more, equivalent to 1.742TB per square inch.

With the Exos M 36TB, Seagate takes storage capacity even further, increasing per-platter density to 3.6TB. Like the 32TB model, the 36TB version utilizes Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), optimizing storage efficiency for massive-scale data centers.

HAMR Technology: Unlocking Higher Storage Densities

The Exos M 36TB is part of the Exos M 3+ platform, which incorporates HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording), a cutting-edge technology that allows for significantly greater data density. This technology enables 30TB+ capacities without sacrificing reliability or performance, making it ideal for AI-driven applications, cloud computing, and big data analytics.
