Japan Injects Additional ¥802.5 Billion into Rapidus to Boost Domestic Semiconductor Industry
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced an additional investment of ¥802.5 billion (approx. $5.3 billion USD) in domestic chipmaker Rapidus, underscoring the country’s intensified efforts to revive its semiconductor industry and secure its position in the global supply chain.
With this new round of funding, government support for Rapidus now totals ¥1.7 trillion, further reinforcing the company’s strategic role in Japan’s tech ambitions.
Rapidus: Japan’s Semiconductor Comeback Champion
Rapidus is a public-private joint venture founded by Japanese industrial giants including Sony, Toyota, and IBM. The company is tasked with leading Japan’s charge into next-generation semiconductor manufacturing, particularly 2nm process technology—considered essential for the future of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.
According to METI, the added funds will help Rapidus:
Begin pilot production in April 2025 at its Hokkaido-based fab
Prepare for mass production of 2nm logic chips by 2027
Strengthen Japan’s capacity to produce energy-efficient, high-performance semiconductors for global AI and data center markets
Strategic Investment in a Competitive Global Arena
The renewed investment comes at a time when global competition for advanced chip manufacturing is at an all-time high. Japan, once a dominant force in semiconductors, has seen its share eroded by South Korea, Taiwan, and the U.S. Rapidus represents a “last chance,” according to its chairman Tetsuro Higashi, for Japan to reclaim relevance in the high-tech race.
The funding aligns with Japan’s broader national strategy to:
Onshore key semiconductor production
Reduce reliance on foreign chipmakers
Secure supply chain resilience in a geopolitically tense environment
A High-Stakes Bet on the Future of Chips
As demand for AI-optimized chips, low-power architectures, and cutting-edge fabrication processes surges, Rapidus is poised to become a crucial pillar in Japan’s next-generation tech ecosystem.
Its collaboration with IBM and adoption of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technologies places the company in direct competition with leading global foundries like TSMC, Samsung, and Intel.
