Global semiconductor leader AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has officially opened its new office in Tainan, Taiwan, signaling a major step forward in the company’s AI development and regional presence. The opening ceremony was led by AMD Taiwan General Manager Chen Min-Hao and attended by Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-Che, who hailed the new site as a milestone in Tainan’s journey to becoming a hub for artificial intelligence.

A Strategic Move into Taiwan’s High-Tech Corridor

The new office is located in the National Science and Technology Council’s Cybersecurity and Smart Technology R&D Building in Guiren District, part of Taiwan’s Southern Science Park. Mayor Huang emphasized Tainan’s strategic position within Taiwan’s high-tech S corridor and its unique advantages in green energy, computing power, and talent.

With abundant renewable energy, a robust southern digital infrastructure, and a growing ecosystem of semiconductor professionals, Tainan is seen as an ideal location for the AI industry. The city also houses key institutions like Academia Sinica, ITRI, and NARLabs, forming the core of the Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City.

Surrounding infrastructure includes the TaiSugar Smart Green Energy Residential Park, bilingual K-12 schools, the upcoming Mitsui Outlet Phase II, and soon-to-launch medical innovation and ecological science parks. These developments are designed to offer not only a strong R&D base but also high-quality living conditions to attract tech talent and businesses.

AMD’s Broader Commitment to Taiwan

Founded in 1969 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, AMD is a global leader in high-performance computing, graphics, and visualization technologies. The establishment of the Tainan office is part of a broader commitment to expanding its R&D footprint in Taiwan, especially in AI-related technologies.

In 2024, AMD announced a NT$5.33 billion (approx. US$162 million) investment to build a cutting-edge R&D center in Taiwan. This initiative was supported by NT$3.31 billion in government subsidies, laying the foundation for the expansion into Tainan.

The Tainan office is expected to focus on AI-driven technology development, aligning with global trends where AI is reshaping industries such as smart security, healthcare, autonomous driving, and intelligent manufacturing.

Taiwan’s Growing Role in Global AI Ecosystem

AMD’s expansion reinforces Taiwan’s role as a critical node in the global AI and semiconductor value chain. The combination of strong local talent, supportive government policies, and a robust infrastructure ecosystem positions Tainan—and Taiwan more broadly—as a magnet for innovation and next-gen technology development.

As AI continues to evolve, investments like AMD’s Tainan office underscore the strategic importance of regional hubs in accelerating breakthroughs and bringing transformative technologies to life.
