As China's AI landscape rapidly evolves, Apple has officially chosen Alibaba as its local AI partner to integrate advanced AI models into iPhones for the Chinese market. This collaboration marks Apple's strategic shift to bolster its AI capabilities while ensuring compliance with China's regulatory framework.

Apple and Alibaba Join Forces for AI Model Development

On February 13, Alibaba co-founder and chairman Joe Tsai confirmed that Apple and Alibaba are collaborating to advance AI model technology. Apple had engaged in discussions with multiple Chinese AI companies before ultimately selecting Alibaba as its preferred partner. The primary objective of this partnership is to enhance Apple Intelligence features in iPhones and other devices sold in China.

According to The Information, Apple and Alibaba have already submitted their AI model for approval to Chinese internet regulators. This move underscores Apple's commitment to reinvigorating its sales in China by integrating localized AI features.

Apple's AI strategy includes working with ChatGPT in global markets, while in China, the company needed a partner that could meet regulatory and performance expectations. Although Apple had previously evaluated DeepSeek, it ultimately opted for Alibaba, citing DeepSeek’s limited workforce and experience in supporting AI deployment at Apple’s scale.

Alibaba’s AI Model: Qwen 2.5 Max

Alibaba has been aggressively expanding its AI capabilities. The company’s latest Qwen 2.5 Max model has demonstrated impressive results in various AI benchmarks, including Arena-Hard, LiveBench, LiveCodeBench, and GPQA-Diamond.

On February 4, Chatbot Arena released its latest AI model rankings, where Qwen 2.5 Max ranked seventh globally and became China’s top-performing non-reasoning AI model, surpassing competitors like DeepSeek V3, o1-mini, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet.

China’s AI Boom: Other Major AI Developments

Apart from Apple’s partnership with Alibaba and DeepSeek’s rapid growth, several other Chinese tech giants have recently made major AI announcements:

Baidu: On February 13, Baidu announced that Ernie Bot (Wenxin Yiyan) will be completely free starting April 1. The AI model will introduce enhanced deep search capabilities, multi-modal input/output, and real-time tool access.

Tencent: Tencent's AI assistant, "Yuanbao," now supports both Tencent’s Hunyuan model and DeepSeek, integrating real-time web searches and Tencent ecosystem data, such as WeChat public accounts and video content.

ByteDance: On February 12, ByteDance's Doubao AI team introduced "UltraMem," a new sparse model architecture that enhances inference speed by 2–6 times while reducing operational costs by up to 83%. This advancement is expected to make AI deployment more efficient and cost-effective.

China’s AI Market Gains Momentum

With Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent, ByteDance, and DeepSeek all investing heavily in AI, China’s AI industry is set for rapid adoption and widespread commercialization. As Apple integrates AI into its ecosystem, its partnership with Alibaba will likely redefine AI-enhanced user experiences in China.
