Apple to Begin Production of M5 Chips with TSMC by Late 2025

Apple is gearing up for the next evolution of its custom silicon, the M5 chip, with production expected to begin in the second half of 2025. Following the successful rollout of M4 chips earlier this year, including the M4 Pro and M4 Max, the new chip is set to bring enhanced performance for iPad Pro and Mac devices.

Advanced Architecture and Manufacturing

The M5 chip, according to reports, will leverage TSMC's 3nm process technology and feature advanced ARM architecture. While the M4 chip also utilizes a 3nm process, the M5 promises improved efficiency and performance, thanks to refinements in its design.

Despite speculation about moving to 2nm technology, Apple has decided to postpone its adoption for the M and A-series chips until 2026, citing cost considerations. However, the inclusion of TSMC's SoIC (System-on-Integrated-Chip) advanced packaging technology will significantly boost the M5’s performance and thermal management. TSMC is reportedly working on a next-generation hybrid SoIC packaging that incorporates thermoplastic carbon fiber composite molding technology, offering better thermal control and reduced electrical leakage compared to traditional 2D designs.

Timeline and Device Integration

The M5 chip entered small-scale trial production as early as July 2024, with mass production slated for the latter half of 2025. This timeline indicates that 2025 spring iPad Pro models may feature minimal updates, with significant hardware upgrades delayed until late 2025 or early 2026.

The MacBook Pro is expected to be the first device powered by the M5 chip, potentially launching alongside an M5-powered iPad Pro. A refreshed MacBook Air with M5 chips is anticipated to follow in 2026, depending on Apple’s broader product strategy.

M5 Chips and AI Integration

In addition to consumer devices, Apple plans to incorporate the M5 chip into its AI server infrastructure, enhancing capabilities under its Apple Intelligence initiative. Reports suggest the company is developing a next-generation large language model (LLM) for Siri, known as "LLM Siri." This model is designed to rival tools like ChatGPT and will be integrated across Apple’s ecosystem. Users could see the debut of this new Siri in spring 2026, alongside M5-powered hardware.

Future Outlook

The M5 chip marks another milestone in Apple’s deepening partnership with TSMC and its commitment to innovation in chip design and manufacturing. With a focus on performance, energy efficiency, and AI integration, the M5 is set to position Apple at the forefront of next-gen computing technology.
