Rapidus, Japan’s innovative semiconductor manufacturer, has announced significant progress towards its 2nm process node production. During the opening ceremony of SEMICON Japan on December 11, Chairman Tetsuro Higashi expressed confidence in the company's trial production line for 2nm chips.

Key Equipment Delivery and Production Timeline

Rapidus confirmed that an EUV lithography machine, a critical tool for advanced chip manufacturing, will be delivered this month. Over 200 additional pieces of equipment are scheduled for phased delivery, with all installations expected to be completed by the end of March 2025. The trial production line will then commence, allowing clients to test and verify the practicality of the chips produced.

Following the trial phase, Rapidus aims to begin mass production of 2nm chips by April 2027. The company has also revealed ongoing discussions with over 40 potential clients, highlighting strong interest in its next-generation semiconductor capabilities.

IBM Collaboration and GAAFET Innovation

Rapidus is collaborating with IBM, which recently showcased advancements in multi-threshold voltage (Multi-Vt) GAAFET (Gate-All-Around Field-Effect Transistors) technology at the IEEE IEDM 2024 conference. These innovations are expected to power Rapidus’s 2nm chips.

The transition from the long-standing FinFET architecture to GAAFET presents unique challenges, especially in achieving Multi-Vt functionality. This technology enables chips to perform complex computations at lower voltages, a critical requirement for modern, energy-efficient semiconductor designs.

Rapidus’s Role in Semiconductor Innovation

With its cutting-edge technology, strategic partnerships, and a clear roadmap, Rapidus is positioning itself as a key player in the semiconductor industry. The company’s 2nm ambitions align with global trends for smaller, more efficient, and more powerful chips, catering to the ever-increasing demands of advanced computing and AI applications.
