onsemi has announced a strategic acquisition of silicon carbide (SiC) junction field-effect transistor (JFET) technology from Qorvo, including its subsidiary United Silicon Carbide, for a cash sum of $115 million. Subject to customary closing conditions, the transaction is expected to finalize in Q1 2025.

Expanding EliteSiC Portfolio

This acquisition bolsters onsemi’s EliteSiC power product portfolio, enabling the company to meet the growing demands for high-efficiency and high-power-density AC-DC solutions, particularly in AI data center power supplies. Additionally, it positions onsemi to address emerging markets, including electric vehicle (EV) battery disconnects and solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs).

Key Advantages of SiC JFET Technology

SiC JFETs offer significant advantages:

  • Lowest on-resistance per chip area, utilizing less than half the area required by alternative technologies.
  • Compatibility with standard, off-the-shelf drivers already deployed with silicon-based transistors for decades.
  • These features enable faster development cycles, reduced energy consumption, and lower system costs, delivering exceptional value to power designers and data center operators.

Strategic Importance for Emerging Technologies

With AI workloads becoming increasingly complex and energy-intensive, reliable SiC JFETs are vital for delivering high energy efficiency and handling high-voltage demands.

“By incorporating Qorvo's industry-leading SiC JFET technology, onsemi’s intelligent power solutions will provide yet another option for optimizing energy consumption and increasing power density,” said Simon Keeton, President and General Manager of onsemi’s Power Solutions Group.

Accelerating Innovation for AI and EV Markets

This acquisition is set to propel onsemi’s capabilities in cutting-edge applications like AI data centers and EV systems, aligning with the company's strategy to drive innovation and cater to the rapidly evolving needs of power-intensive markets.
