On April 16, U.S.-based Polar Semiconductor announced a strategic technology licensing agreement with Renesas Electronics Corporation, a major global semiconductor solutions provider. Through this collaboration, Polar will gain access to Renesas' GaN-on-Silicon (GaN-on-Si) technology for high-voltage applications.

As the only dedicated foundry in the U.S. focusing on sensor, power, and high-voltage semiconductor manufacturing, Polar brings extensive expertise in advanced chip production. Renesas, with its broad portfolio in embedded processing, analog, power, and connectivity solutions, is leveraging this partnership to scale its 650V GaN-on-Si device technology.

Under the agreement, Polar Semiconductor will manufacture GaN devices at its facility in Minnesota, which was recently upgraded with state-of-the-art processing and automation equipment. The facility aims to meet the surging global demand for next-generation power semiconductor technologies.

The collaboration marks a significant step toward boosting the U.S. domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology is widely seen as a game-changer in both power electronics and RF applications, offering higher efficiency, faster switching speeds, and smaller system sizes compared to traditional silicon-based technologies.

This licensing deal allows Renesas to expand its GaN footprint to 200mm wafers, enabling broader commercial deployment across various sectors, including AI infrastructure, energy systems, industrial automation, electric vehicles, and high-value IoT applications.

As demand for energy-efficient and high-performance semiconductors continues to grow, this partnership positions both Polar and Renesas to capitalize on the fast-expanding GaN market while advancing technological innovation in critical industries.
