MACOM to Invest $345 Million to Expand GaN-on-SiC Wafer Production Facilities

On January 14, MACOM, a leading radio frequency (RF) semiconductor company, announced a significant investment of $345 million (approximately ¥2.52 billion CNY) to upgrade its semiconductor wafer manufacturing plants in Massachusetts and North Carolina.

On January 14, MACOM, a leading radio frequency (RF) semiconductor company, announced a significant investment of $345 million (approximately ¥2.52 billion CNY) to upgrade its semiconductor wafer manufacturing plants in Massachusetts and North Carolina.

Expansion and Technological Upgrades

The Massachusetts facility will undergo a major expansion with the addition of a cleanroom and upgrades to the existing 4-inch wafer production line, which processes materials such as GaAs, GaN, silicon, and other III-V compounds. The company also plans to introduce advanced 6-inch SiC-based GaN (GaN-on-SiC) manufacturing technology, which is expected to significantly boost the facility's production capabilities.

In addition to equipment upgrades, the infrastructure of the Massachusetts plant, including HVAC systems, water, electricity, and solar power systems, will be modernized to improve overall operational efficiency.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina plant will focus on increasing its 6-inch wafer production capacity by installing state-of-the-art MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) equipment. This move aims to support the development of RF GaN-on-SiC technology, which is essential for high-performance RF applications.

Strategic Investment for Future Growth

Stephen G. Daly, President and CEO of MACOM, commented, "This investment plan is not only an upgrade to MACOM's existing manufacturing capabilities but also a strategic move to position the company for future advancements in semiconductor technology. By enhancing domestic semiconductor manufacturing, we will be better equipped to serve our customers and foster innovation across the industry."

This significant investment highlights MACOM’s commitment to expanding its production capacity and maintaining a competitive edge in the growing GaN and RF semiconductor markets.
