February 20, 2025 – Micron Technology has announced a major milestone in SSD performance, collaborating with Astera Labs to successfully demonstrate PCIe 6.0 interoperability and set a new speed record for data center storage solutions.

Astera Labs, a leader in connectivity solutions, made headlines earlier in March 2024 by launching its PCIe 6.0 Aries 6 Retimer series, followed by the debut of its first PCIe 6.0 switch in October 2024. This strategic move officially marked the company’s entrance into the PCIe switch market.

In August 2024, Micron unveiled its first PCIe 6.0 SSD, specifically designed to support cutting-edge data ecosystems, at the Flash Memory Summit (FMS). To ensure peak synergy between the two companies' technologies, Astera Labs conducted rigorous validation tests on Micron's production-ready SSDs at its specialized laboratory facilities.

The breakthrough came during DesignCon 2025, where Astera Labs showcased the industry’s first-ever PCIe 6.0 interoperability demonstration between a PCIe 6.0 switch and a PCIe 6.0 SSD endpoint. The live demonstration highlighted the seamless performance and robust integration of Astera’s switching technology with Micron’s high-speed SSD.

Micron’s latest PCIe 6.0 SSD achieved a staggering 27 GB/s data transfer speed, setting a new benchmark for PCIe 6.0 technology in data center applications. This figure surpasses earlier performance claims of a 26 GB/s sequential read rate, making it the fastest PCIe 6.0 SSD demonstration to date.

As data center demands surge, breakthroughs like these are crucial in pushing the boundaries of speed and efficiency, paving the way for faster data processing and more reliable AI-driven workloads.
