With AI-driven demand surging due to groundbreaking advancements from ChatGPT and DeepSeek, the semiconductor industry is entering a new phase of high-performance computing. As 3nm chips are now in mass production, major chip manufacturers are racing to bring 2nm fabrication plants online, with 2025 set as a key milestone for trial and mass production. With the deadline fast approaching, the construction and development of 2nm fabs have entered a phase of full-scale acceleration.

Rapidus: On Track for 2nm Trial Production in April 2025

Rapidus, Japan’s ambitious semiconductor initiative, is targeting 2025 for trial production and 2027 for mass production of its 2nm chips.

According to CEO Atsuyoshi Koike, construction is progressing smoothly, with over 200 advanced semiconductor tools being installed in its Hokkaido fab. Trial production will commence on April 1, 2025, with chip samples expected to be delivered to Broadcom by June 2025 for validation. Upon successful testing, Rapidus will be officially commissioned to manufacture 2nm chips for Broadcom.

Key to Rapidus' production capability is the adoption of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. The company has ordered 10 ASML Twinscan NXE:3800E EUV machines, with the first units arriving in Japan in late 2024. These machines are capable of processing up to 220 wafers per hour, marking a major milestone as Japan's first EUV deployment.

Economic Impact:
Rapidus estimates that between 2027 and 2036, the total economic impact of its 2nm production will reach ¥18 trillion (~$125 billion USD).

TSMC: On Schedule for 2nm Mass Production in 2025

TSMC, the global leader in advanced chip manufacturing, confirmed that 2nm mass production (N2) will commence in the second half of 2025, with N2P (an enhanced version) and A16 (1.6nm) launching in 2026.

Fab Expansion & Production Capacity

Hsinchu Baoshan P1 & P2 Fabs

Equipment installation began in April 2024.

Production verification is expected in Q4 2024, with mass production starting in 2025.

Hsinchu F20 Fab

A dedicated 2nm trial production line is already operational.

Expected mass production ramp-up in Q4 2025.

Kaohsiung 2nm Fab

Initially scheduled for mid-2025 equipment installation and late 2025 production start.

Due to high demand, construction was accelerated by six months, with equipment installation completed in November 2024.

Production Scale & Key Clients

By the end of 2025, TSMC’s 2nm production capacity will exceed 50,000 wafers per month.

By 2026, the monthly output will reach 120,000-130,000 wafers.

Key clients: Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, and Qualcomm are among TSMC’s early adopters of 2nm technology.

Samsung: Enhancing Yield & Expanding 2nm Production

Samsung is ramping up its 2nm production efforts at its Hwaseong S3 fab, where equipment installations are currently underway. The company is expected to begin trial production in Q1 2025 and convert remaining 3nm lines to 2nm by the end of 2025.

Technical Challenges & Yield Optimization

Samsung has encountered yield-related challenges in its 2nm production, particularly in achieving the extreme precision required for gate-all-around (GAA) transistors. Despite this, the company is actively working on process improvements to meet market demands.

Confirmed 2nm Clients

Preferred Networks (PFN) (Japan) will manufacture AI chips on Samsung’s 2nm process.

Ambarella (USA) will use Samsung’s 2nm technology for advanced vision processors.

Additional Korean semiconductor firms have also secured 2nm production slots.

The Road Ahead: 2025 as a Pivotal Year for 2nm Chips

With multiple foundries pushing 2nm into production, the semiconductor industry is poised for a new wave of AI-driven innovation. As competition intensifies between TSMC, Samsung, and Rapidus, global chip supply chains will experience transformative shifts, impacting industries from AI data centers to next-gen mobile computing.
