Fuji Electric has officially begun mass production of 6-inch silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors at its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. This marks a significant step in the company’s efforts to expand its presence in the SiC power semiconductor market.

Launch of 6-Inch SiC Production

Originally scheduled for mid-2024, the production timeline was delayed due to reduced demand stemming from a global downturn in electric vehicle (EV) sales. The production is taking place at Fuji Electric Tsugaru Semiconductor, a subsidiary located in Goshogawara, Aomori Prefecture.

Fuji Electric’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Strategy

Fuji Electric’s Matsumoto Factory in Nagano Prefecture also plays a key role in the company’s semiconductor production. In addition to traditional silicon-based power semiconductors, the factory supplies SiC power semiconductors for automotive, energy, and railway applications.

In December 2023, Fuji Electric announced a significant investment plan of ¥200 billion (approximately $1.4 billion) for its semiconductor division from 2024 to 2026. The focus of this investment is on power semiconductors for EV power control systems. The plan includes constructing a new production line for SiC power semiconductors at the Matsumoto Factory, with operations for 8-inch SiC wafers expected to begin in 2027.

Collaborative Projects and Government Support

In November 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) announced subsidies for a joint project between Denso Corporation and Fuji Electric. The project, aimed at enhancing Japan's SiC semiconductor capabilities, involves a total investment of ¥211.6 billion (approximately $1.4 billion), with up to ¥70.5 billion ($490 million) in government funding.

Under this collaboration:

Denso will focus on producing SiC substrates.

Fuji Electric will manufacture SiC power devices and expand its production facilities.

The project targets an annual production capacity of 310,000 wafers, with supply starting in May 2027.

Future Outlook

Fuji Electric’s advancements in SiC technology, supported by substantial investments and collaborations, underscore its commitment to meeting the growing demand for high-efficiency power semiconductors in EVs and other applications. The upcoming 8-inch SiC wafer production line positions the company as a key player in the next phase of semiconductor innovation.
