Samsung to Build 10nm 7th-Generation DRAM Pilot Line at Pyeongtaek P2 Plant

Samsung Electronics has announced plans to establish a pilot line for its 10nm 7th-generation DRAM (1d DRAM) at its Pyeongtaek P2 facility. This initiative is aimed at strengthening the company's competitive edge and improving yield rates for its next-generation memory products.

Samsung Electronics has announced plans to establish a pilot line for its 10nm 7th-generation DRAM (1d DRAM) at its Pyeongtaek P2 facility. This initiative is aimed at strengthening the company's competitive edge and improving yield rates for its next-generation memory products.

Construction Timeline and Objectives

Start Date: Construction of the 1d DRAM pilot line is slated to begin in Q4 2024.

Completion Date: The project is expected to be finished by Q1 2025.

Estimated Capacity: Industry sources suggest a typical pilot line's capacity is around 10,000 wafers per month, although specific details have not been disclosed.

The pilot line will support Samsung's plans to commence mass production of 1c DRAM in 2025 and 1d DRAM in 2026, demonstrating the company’s proactive strategy to stay ahead in the competitive memory market.

Strategic Leadership and Technological Investment

The new DRAM initiative comes under the guidance of Young-Hyun Jun, Samsung's recently appointed head of the Device Solutions (DS) division. Jun's extensive technical background in memory technology is expected to drive innovation and reform within the DS unit. Alongside DRAM advancements, Samsung is also doubling down on investments in NAND flash technologies.

P1 Facility: Recently launched the world’s first test line for 400-layer 3D NAND (V10).

P4 Facility: Deployed equipment for 286-layer 3D NAND (V9) manufacturing.

Maintaining a Competitive Edge

Samsung's dual focus on DRAM and NAND technologies underscores its commitment to maintaining technological superiority in the global memory market. With significant investments in pilot lines and next-generation product development, Samsung is positioning itself to outpace competitors in terms of both innovation and production efficiency.

By integrating advanced pilot lines and scaling up production capabilities, Samsung aims to solidify its leadership in the memory industry while meeting the growing demand for high-performance storage solutions.
