STMicroelectronics and Qualcomm Forge Strategic Alliance to Advance Edge AI-Driven IoT Solutions

STMicroelectronics (ST) and Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd. (QTI) have entered into a strategic agreement to jointly develop next-generation industrial and consumer IoT solutions based on edge AI. This partnership integrates Qualcomm’s advanced AI wireless connectivity technology with ST’s STM32 microcontroller (MCU) ecosystem, aimed at streamlining IoT application development by enhancing ease, speed, and cost-effectiveness. Through this collaboration, ST will offer seamless integration of Qualcomm’s wireless software into STM32 MCUs, enabling developers to leverage a unified ecosystem that simplifies the deployment of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread multi-protocol System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions.

Remi El-Ouazzane, President of ST’s Microcontrollers, Digital ICs & RF Products Division, highlighted, “Edge AI is proliferating across enterprise, industrial, and consumer devices, with wireless connectivity at its core. Our partnership with Qualcomm on Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread multi-protocol SoC technology is the first step in a broader collaboration to expand our portfolio. By integrating Qualcomm’s wireless technologies, we are delivering tremendous value to our global STM32 user base.”

Rahul Patel, SVP & GM of Connectivity, Broadband & Networking at Qualcomm Technologies, added, “Qualcomm has pioneered wireless IoT technology from 4G/5G to high-performance Wi-Fi and low-power connectivity solutions. Our collaboration with ST brings together Qualcomm’s cutting-edge wireless connectivity with ST’s market-leading STM32 MCU ecosystem, facilitating rapid adoption across the IoT industry. Together, we are enabling a new IoT development experience for developers and end-users alike.”

ST plans to offer standalone modules with integrated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread multi-protocol SoCs compatible with STM32 MCUs. The initial products will be available to OEMs in Q1 2025, with expanded offerings anticipated thereafter. The collaboration’s product roadmap will also extend to mobile cellular connections for industrial IoT.

Andrew Zignani, Research Director at ABI Research, commented, “With over 80 billion IoT devices projected by 2028, products combining high-performance wireless connectivity with various MCUs will underpin the next wave of IoT innovation. ST and Qualcomm’s strategic partnership represents a formidable alliance. Their integrated solutions will empower device manufacturers to develop IoT applications more efficiently, addressing the rapidly evolving IoT market.
