STMicroelectronics Partners with Amazon to Launch AI Data Center Photonics Chip

On February 20, STMicroelectronics announced the launch of a groundbreaking photonics chip, developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This new chip targets the rapidly growing market for AI data center infrastructure, aiming to address the soaring demand for faster and more energy-efficient data communication solutions.

Part of the $500 Billion 'Stargate' Initiative

The collaboration between STMicroelectronics and AWS is part of the ambitious “Stargate” initiative, a $500 billion investment project aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure across the United States. While the surge in demand for NVIDIA’s AI processors has captured much of the spotlight, there’s an increasing need for chips that support memory, power management, and communication within AI data centers.

STMicroelectronics’ new photonics chip is designed to meet this need by enhancing transceiver speed and significantly reducing energy consumption during data transmission. Advanced AI data centers require hundreds of thousands of these high-speed transceivers to manage massive volumes of data in real-time.

AWS Partnership for Next-Generation Data Centers

Vincent Fraisse, General Manager of STMicroelectronics’ Radio Frequency and Communication Division, confirmed the partnership with AWS. According to Fraisse, AWS has been deeply involved in the development of the technology and plans to deploy these chips within its own infrastructure once mass production begins later this year. The manufacturing will take place at STMicroelectronics’ Crolles facility in France.

Fraisse also revealed ongoing collaborations with leading optical solution providers and market leaders in pluggable optical transceivers, who are set to integrate the new chip into next-generation optical modules. Although specific partner companies were not disclosed, industry speculation points to top players like Coherent and Cisco from the U.S., as well as Innolight and Accelink from China.

Photonics: The Future of High-Speed Data Communication

According to market research firm TrendForce, fiber-optic communication offers significant advantages over traditional electronic data transmission, including higher bandwidth, lower latency, and reduced signal loss. These features make photonics technology a critical enabler for AI server infrastructure, which demands ultra-efficient data transmission capabilities.

With the rise of AI servers, the demand for high-speed optical transceivers operating at 800Gbps and 1.6Tbps is expected to surge. Even conventional servers are experiencing growing demand for 400Gbps optical modules as they undergo hardware upgrades.

TrendForce data highlights the rapid expansion of this market:

In 2023, global shipments of optical transceivers with speeds of 400G or higher reached 6.4 million units.

In 2024, shipments are projected to surpass 20.4 million units.

By 2025, shipments are expected to exceed 31.9 million units, representing an impressive annual growth rate of 56.5%.

Positioning for the AI-Powered Future

With its collaboration with AWS and strategic partnerships across the optical communications industry, STMicroelectronics is positioning itself as a key player in the AI data center revolution. As AI-driven applications continue to grow, the demand for faster, more efficient data transmission solutions will remain at the forefront of technological innovation.
