Tower Semiconductor and Alcyon Photonics Partner to Accelerate Integrated Photonics Innovation

On March 26, Tower Semiconductor announced a strategic partnership with Alcyon Photonics, a leader in integrated photonics design, aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation optical applications. The collaboration will focus on delivering silicon-validated photonic building blocks (BBs) and circuits optimized for high performance, leveraging Tower’s high-volume SiPho (Silicon Photonics) platform.

Streamlining Innovation from Design to Production

By combining Alcyon’s proprietary design capabilities with Tower Semiconductor’s robust SiPho process, the two companies are enabling a seamless transition from concept to production. The goal is to ensure high reliability, manufacturability, and performance for integrated photonics products at scale.

Alcyon’s technology is optimized for Tower’s platform and demonstrates exceptional stability—maintaining channel drift to within 3nm, even under fabrication variation tolerances of up to 30nm. This precision, combined with Tower’s proven volume manufacturing capabilities, offers customers a highly scalable and cost-efficient path to bring advanced photonics innovations to market.

Strengthening Tower’s SiPho Ecosystem

The partnership also reinforces Tower Semiconductor’s position as a key enabler in the silicon photonics space. By integrating verified high-performance photonic IP from Alcyon Photonics, Tower enhances its ability to serve customers across industries such as data centers, telecom, automotive, quantum computing, and AI.

The Growing Promise of Silicon Photonics

Silicon photonics is a breakthrough technology that integrates light-based communication onto silicon chips, replacing traditional electrical signals with photonic transmission. The benefits are substantial:

Ultra-high bandwidth

Extremely low power consumption

Resistance to electromagnetic interference

These characteristics make silicon photonics ideal for high-speed interconnects, next-gen wireless communication (5G/6G), autonomous driving systems, and quantum computing. By using mature silicon processes, the technology promises to overcome the limits of electron-based transmission, reshaping the future of computing, sensing, and connectivity.
