In a significant move for the solid-state drive (SSD) market, Solidigm and Broadcom have renewed their multi-year partnership to develop high-capacity SSD controllers specifically designed for AI-driven infrastructure. This latest agreement underscores the two companies’ long-standing collaboration in advancing SSD technology across multiple generations.

Broadcom & Solidigm: A Decade-Long Partnership

Solidigm has been leveraging Broadcom’s custom SSD controllers for over a decade, spanning various SSD interface technologies—including SATA, SAS, and NVMe. To date, more than 1.2 billion Solidigm SSDs featuring Broadcom controllers have been shipped worldwide.

122.88TB SSD: Breaking New Ground

Solidigm made waves in November 2024 by unveiling the D5-P5336, a record-breaking 122.88TB enterprise-grade SSD—the highest-capacity SSD in the industry. This cutting-edge storage solution relies on Broadcom’s controllers, demonstrating the crucial role of this partnership in pushing SSD capacities to new heights.

Industry Leaders Weigh In

Kevin Noh, Co-CEO of Solidigm, emphasized the impact of this collaboration:

"With our groundbreaking 122TB SSD, Solidigm continues to lead in high-capacity QLC SSD technology. From 8TB to 122TB, all of our drives leverage the same Broadcom controller, ensuring greater compatibility and ease of adoption for our customers. Our partnership with Broadcom is essential in enabling efficiency gains for AI infrastructure at scale."

Charlie Kawwas, President of Broadcom’s Semiconductor Solutions Group, shared his perspective:

"Our multi-generational collaboration with Solidigm continues to drive innovation in connectivity and storage for large-scale AI data centers. We are excited to extend this partnership and bring next-generation storage solutions to power AI-driven workloads."

Implications for AI and Enterprise Storage

The increasing demand for AI workloads, machine learning, and cloud storage is fueling the need for higher-capacity SSDs. As AI models grow more complex, data storage solutions must evolve to accommodate massive datasets efficiently. The continued partnership between Solidigm and Broadcom signals a strong commitment to advancing AI-ready storage solutions.

With AI data centers requiring ultra-high-capacity SSDs that offer speed, efficiency, and reliability, this collaboration sets the stage for future breakthroughs in enterprise storage.
