The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association has announced the release of the UFS 4.1 (JESD220G) standard, along with the updated UFS Host Controller Interface (UFSHCI) 4.1 standard (JESD223F). This marks a significant advancement in flash storage, introducing higher bandwidth, faster performance, and enhanced security features tailored for high-performance, low-power mobile applications and computing systems.

UFS 4.1: Key Features and Improvements

Building on the MIPI Alliance’s M-PHY® 5.0 and UniPro® 2.0 specifications, UFS 4.1 doubles the UFS interface bandwidth, achieving theoretical read/write speeds of up to 4.2 GB/s. It maintains backward compatibility with UFS 4.0 hardware while delivering numerous enhancements:

Improved Memory Management: Increased system throughput with optimized data handling.

Enhanced Security: RPMB authentication prevents unauthorized access to stored data.

QLC NAND Support: Advanced storage logic improves precision, laying the foundation for Quad-Level Cell (QLC) NAND implementations.

Energy Efficiency: UFS 4.1 optimizes performance while minimizing power consumption, crucial for AI-enabled devices and edge computing applications.

Driving Innovation in AI and Edge Computing

The release of UFS 4.1 aligns with the rising demand for AI-driven applications and the growing need for high-speed, energy-efficient storage in edge devices. AI-powered systems rely on faster data access and higher storage precision to meet the increasing complexity of real-time operations.

Industry Leaders’ Insights

SK Hynix: Jae Yeun Yun, VP of NAND Product Planning and Support, noted, “UFS 4.1 is more than a storage solution; it’s a catalyst for the next wave of AI-driven mobile innovation.” SK Hynix showcased its UFS 4.1 products, including 512GB and 1TB models, at FMS 2024, months before the standard’s formal release.

Samsung: Jay Hyun, VP of NAND Planning and Support, highlighted the suitability of UFS for edge AI devices, mobile systems, and automotive applications. He added that UFS 4.1 enhancements enable faster performance, secure boot processes, and improved QLC NAND support.

Micron: Mark Montierth, VP and GM of Micron’s Mobile Business Unit, emphasized the importance of collaboration within the mobile ecosystem to accelerate the deployment of UFS 4.1, enabling cutting-edge AI solutions at the device edge.

Western Digital: Omer Katz, Senior Director, remarked that UFS 4.1 “unlocks the potential of next-gen edge devices, enabling complex AI models and applications to run locally with exceptional speed and efficiency.” The increased bandwidth also accelerates AI inference, delivering faster, more responsive AI experiences.

Looking Ahead: UFS 4.1 Adoption

The introduction of UFS 4.1 marks a pivotal step for mobile, automotive, and AI-driven markets. Its combination of high performance, energy efficiency, and robust security positions it as the preferred storage standard for next-generation devices. As major players like SK Hynix, Samsung, Micron, and Western Digital integrate UFS 4.1 into their offerings, the global tech ecosystem is poised for a significant leap in innovation and capability.
